Charter School Funding

The State Legislature created public charter schools in 1995 with bipartisan support.

Public charter schools are funded by the state on a per-student basis — just like traditional school districts — but unlike traditional school districts, public charter schools have no local taxing authority.

While the State has a Charter Allotment to help make up the gap, the gap persists and public charter schools receive about 8% less overall compared to ISDs. A big portion of the gap comes from facilities funding, where ISDs can pass local bonds but public charter schools are limited to a facilities funding amount set by the State.
