There is beauty in the art of creating something with your own hands. In crochet club, students will learn the basic stitches required to begin this art of creation. In Crochet club, students will then learn how to use the magic circle to construct the granny square. These squares can be turned into anything from a bag to a cardigan. We will end our club time working to construct granny squares that will be turned into a blanket for the end of the year auction. Whether your scholar has never touched crochet yarn, or they have been crocheting for years, crochet club is a chance for them to gather with their peers and create something beautiful with their own hands.
One Act Theater Club (HS): Mrs. Wright/Ms. Wall- Mondays & Wednesdays 4:10-4:55
We are pleased to introduce the One Act Theater Club, a new opportunity for high school scholars interested in exploring the performing arts. This student-run, student-led club is designed to immerse participants in all aspects of theater production while fostering creativity, collaboration, and leadership.
Scholars will engage in the full theatrical process, including set, prop, and costume design, as well as blocking and stage performance. The culminating experience for the year will be a student-led Shakespeare production presented in the spring.
Linguistics Club: Ms. Smith- Tuesdays 4:10-4:55
Language is a fundamental, fascinating part of human existence that is too often taken for granted. Linguistics Club gives students an opportunity to explore language in all of its wondrous, wild, weird, and wacky glory. We will start by discussing the nature and defining characteristics of language in general, and then specific areas of linguistic study, from phonetics and morphology to writing systems and paralinguistic features. Along the way, students will learn practical strategies for language acquisition, working toward their final project: a short presentation either in or about their chosen language.
Creative Writing Club (High School): Ms. Covington- Thursdays 4:10-4:55
Storytellers, worldbuilders, poets, and playwrights! Join us in Creative Writing club this year for the inspiration and motivation you need to elevate your writing. Weekly sessions involve writing exercises as well as workshopping. Bring your drafts, your ideas, your quandaries; or simply come ready to read and respond to your peers’ work. Fiction, non-fiction, song lyrics, game narratives—crafters in all genres and media are welcome.
Latin Club: Ms. Baptiste/Ms. Sartori/Ms. Dailey- Tuesdays 4:10-4:55
The Latin Club is for scholars who love to learn more about the ancient world of Rome and Greece. It is designed to prepare students for the National Latin Exam. Members will review and practice with previous exams while deepening their knowledge of Greek mythology, Roman history, geography, culture, and important Latin quotes. Students will be grouped by grade level and work in sections with their teachers to ensure focused preparation tailored to the specific requirements of each exam. In addition to NLE practice, scholars will play games to increase their knowledge in these areas.
Wargaming Club (8th-10th): Mr. Adams- Tuesdays 4:10-4:55
This semester’s wargaming club will continue using the Commands and Colors system by GMT Games to re-fight classic battles of the ancient world.
Due to this game system that uses cards and dice to simulate the fog of war, students will find that they are unable to do all they want to do on the field of battle– just like in real life. Is right now the moment to commit your heavy infantry to the fight, or should they hold back just a bit longer? Do you spur your cavalry forward after the fleeing enemy, knowing that it could be a trap? How will you use the terrain available to your best advantage? Through friendly competition the Wargaming Club will seek both enjoyment and a historical understanding of the difficulties of a commander.
This semester, students will step into the shoes of Spartacus as he leads his gladiators in the Third Servile War of 73BC in the heart of the Roman Republic. Will freedom prevail, or will their hopes be crushed by the boot of Rome and Marcus Crassus, richest man in the republic?
This semester’s theme: Alexander the Great and the Macedonian Phalanx
Stock Investment Club (8th-HS): Ms. Ferris- Tuesdays 4:10-4:55
Last semester, our students managed a portfolio full of hot stocks – including NVIDIA, Google, and DraftKings – and wound up winning, with a $1,500 total gain! Was it beginner’s luck or… do we have an insightful group of junior investors? Join us on Tuesdays this semester to learn the ins and outs of the stock market and build a spring portfolio.
Great Hearts Lions Spirit Club (High School): Ms. Audi- Fridays 1:15-2:45
We’ve got spirit, how ’bout YOU?!
Does your scholar love to draw? Paint? Create? Support Lions’ athletics and other school spirit happenings on campus?
We had so much fun in the fall and we’re excited to meet again this spring! In spirit club, 9th and 10th graders will meet in the high school lounge to decorate signs and banners for the following week’s games. This club will also help with pep rallies, locker decorating, chant writing and being spirit leaders at games to help rouse the crowd.
This is a great opportunity to build school spirit and create culture as the school continues to grow. Come be a part!
History Club: Mr. Wing- Thursdays 4:10-4:55
The history club exists to foster deepened love and knowledge of history through the exploration of topics and events beyond what is covered in the curriculum. This semester’s topic is Napoleon’s Invasion of Russia in 1812. Scholars will enjoy readings, seminars, stories, and games that showcase how the mightiest army in Europe to that day, led by one of the history’s most dynamic commanders, found not only defeat, but utter ruin amidst the frozen plains of Russia.
